会話で一番大事なことは、じつは言い残すことなんです。いちばん言いたいことは言葉にしてはいけない。そこで止まってしまうから。会話というのはステートメントではないんです。優れたパーカッショニストはいちばん大事な音はたたかない。それと同じことです。
たとえば「おれの言うことが聞こえたのか」「聞こえたよ」というのではとまってしまう。「おれの言うことが聞こえたのか」ときたら「つんぼじゃねえや」と返すのが会話です。これは、ぼくの記憶によれば、ゴーリキーの『どん底』に出てくる会話ですが。とにかく無駄にとまってはいけない。それが基本です。
