場所は東京・渋谷、道玄坂交番近くの割烹でした。
ある夜、Ａ氏が私に諭してくださいました。

Ａ氏「平林くんも、モノ書きをやっているんだったら、『消しゴムで書く』って教わったことがあるだろう」
私「消しゴム？　ですか？」
Ａ氏「ほら、記事を書くときに、まず、『これはニュースだ』と原稿に書く。その後に、誰がどこで何をしたかを書く。書き終えて、ああ、本当にニュースになっているなと思えば、その記事は良し。『これはニュースだ』の部分を消しゴムで削ればいい。でも、その記事が『これはニュースだ』の続きにそぐわないようであればボツにする……」
私「あ、本で読んだことがあります。自分でも意識しています」
Ａ氏「では、批判記事を書くとき、『これはニュースだ』のかわりに冒頭に何と書く？」
私「…………（沈黙）…………」
Ａ氏「『ウチの業界のために言えば』と冒頭に書くんだよ。その後に、業界に警鐘を鳴らす記事や、企業の姿勢を批判する記事を書く。マシンの不出来を指摘してもいい。で、それが本当に業界のためだと思えば良し、そうなっていなければ自分でボツにすることだな」
